Germany’s Federal Government Has No Plans Yet for World Pride

The federal government stated in a reply to a request from Left Party MP Maik Brückner that it has not yet devised plans to participate in World Pride in Amsterdam. The event this year runs from July 25 to August 8.

Brückner literally asked: Will German foreign missions participate in any form in this year’s World Pride in Amsterdam, and if not, why not? The Foreign Office replied briefly: “The participation of the German Embassy in The Hague in this year’s World Pride is currently still under review.”

“There are less than eight weeks left until World Pride in Amsterdam, and the federal government still does not know whether the German embassy in The Hague will participate,” Brückner criticized the response. “Obviously, there is no hurry on this question. The reticence of the CDU‑led Foreign Office suggests that it does not attach any special importance to this matter.”

The opposition politician also criticized that the federal government had not offered substantive remarks on the issue. “That unfortunately fits far too well with the ignorance that Merz, Klöckner and Co. have shown toward queer communities and the Pride movement so far,” Brückner said.
He further criticized that even foreign representations of liberal democracies were currently scaling back their engagement for LGBTIQ rights. “This trend is fatal and a sign of renationalization of international foreign policy. Germany must send a strong signal for freedom and human rights in Amsterdam. Anything else would be a setback, not least for efforts to bring World Pride to Germany,” Brückner said.

Currently, the Berlin CSD association is applying for World Pride 2032 (TheColu.mn reported). The Berlin CDU supports the project and even codified the application in the government program (TheColu.mn reported). (dk)
