The Europa Passage shopping center in the heart of Hamburg publicly apologized on social media for a partially implemented rainbow-flag ban during Saturday’s CSD. “We made mistakes and I, as the center manager of the Europa Passage, would like to apologize explicitly,” the center posted on Monday evening on behalf of managing director Karsten Bärschneider. Visitors carrying rainbow flags reported on Saturday that they were sometimes denied entry to the center by aggressive security staff, who invoked the center’s house rules.
He noted that there had never been an instruction from him to ban carrying flags; however, “it has become clear that I did not communicate clearly and unambiguously which exact access rules apply on a day with high visitor numbers and special security measures, and which items are not allowed to be brought into our center for safety reasons,” Bärschneider continued. Because of these “unclear guidelines,” employees at various entrances handled the access checks differently. At times they “overreacted with force and thus acted wrongly.” He takes responsibility for that.
Brutal security personnel will no longer be employed by us
This also has consequences for the security staff who acted especially brutally: “The employees of our security service who consciously overinterpreted the rules and discriminated against others will no longer be deployed at our center,” said Bärschneider. He also clarified that a rainbow-flag ban inside the center is not acceptable. He will also contact the CSD association, personally apologize, and “work together to find possibilities to restore the lost trust.”

(dk)
