The chemical union IGBCE is examining allegations of sexual harassment within its own youth wing. There are indications of “unacceptable incidents of misconduct,” the union reported from its Hannover headquarters. Specifically, it concerns the expressed suspicion of “systematic sexism and harassment by those in leadership around the IGBCE’s youth.”
“Discrimination, sexual harassment, homophobia, or other forms of boundary-crossing behavior are in clear contradiction to our values and to our union’s guiding principles,” the statement said. “Against this background, the matters brought to us are deeply troubling.” The union has therefore commissioned an independent external law firm to review and address the incidents.
“The subjects of the investigation are ‘the allegations that have come to the IGBCE’s attention against partly former, partly still-employed staff in connection with their union activities,’ reads a statement from the union released by the commissioned law firm. The union did not provide further details about which allegations specifically are involved. Details are not to be disclosed until the review is completed, it was stated.
