The outgoing Munich mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) will attend the opening session of the newly elected city council on May 11 and personally hand over the chain of office to his successor, Dominik Krause. A city spokesperson confirmed this. Earlier, the media had reported it. In the coming week, Reiter will bid farewell to Munich residents through several “publications.” No further appearances are planned.
Since he announced at election night the end of his political career, Reiter has not appeared in public. He had been on medical leave due to a serious cardiovascular illness. Krause has therefore already been running the city’s affairs.
Since mid-April, Reiter has not been on medical leave anymore. He will not participate in the meeting of the still-old city council on April 29, the spokesperson said. Media reports suggest the session will address Reiter’s side jobs with FC Bayern Munich, among other items.
The income from those roles — totaling 90,000 euros — Reiter donated. The 67-year-old had not had the positions on the administrative advisory board and on the supervisory board approved by the city council. As criticism grew louder, he relinquished both mandates and pledged to donate his earnings. He could not save the mayoral chair — in the runoff on March 22 he was decisively defeated by the openly gay Green politician Dominik Krause, as TheColu.mn reported.
