The Male Nude: Between Art Quotes and Eroticism

“Nice Guys & Bad Cocks” is a title that nails the program of this calendar precisely. The 13 photographs in total focus on the male body and deliberately distill it to its essential elements. The German team around Franziska Brinkhoff, Susanne Schmidtmeier, and Jens Brüggemann has aesthetically staged the theme of male photography in the A4 calendar from an unapologetically erotic perspective.

Unmistakably, the calendar nods to depictions of the male body from antiquity. Unlike many classical precedents, the black-and-white images do not show the penis in a restrained or casual way, but are usually erect and thus demonstratively present. It is precisely this choice that makes the calendar a striking project. The idea behind it is stated as plainly as possible by the team: if erotic calendars featuring women have open and explicit staging, there should be something comparable for men as well.

Intimacy and Sensuality

The notion that the flaccid penis merely reflects a partial reality—and is, photographically, far less enticing—persists, but showing the male groin in full presence seems the logical consequence in this context.

From an outside perspective, the idea of such a shoot might trigger other associations. In reality, however, photographers describe working on these subjects as a focused, technically demanding, and artistically serious process. That is one of the series’ key appeals: despite the sober working reality behind the camera, the images convey a sense of intimacy and sensuality. The men’s bodies come across as desirable, alive, and theatrically condensed, as if captured in the moment of arousal. This effect stems not least from precise lighting and the deliberate use of black-and-white photography.

Another aspect that explicitly sets the project apart from digital image fantasies is a quality seal bearing the phrase “No AI-Fakes” to guarantee that all subjects were created without AI. According to the project’s own description, only real models are shown.

Thus, “Nice Guys & Bad Cocks” ultimately sits at the crossroads of an art quotation, a body study, and homoerotic staging. The high-quality, spiral-bound calendar is understood less as a mere accessory and more as a visual statement. A successor, “Nice Guys & Bad Cocks 2027,” has already appeared (Amazon Affiliate Link). More about it will also be shared here. (dd/pm)
