Heated Rivalry Star: Closeted Gay Athletes Contact Me

Canadian actor Hudson Williams has been contacted by several gay athletes who have not come out publicly. The revelation came from the lead actor of the series “Heated Rivalry” on the radio show hosted by the openly gay U.S. host Andy Cohen.

“There are people who reach out anonymously and say, ‘I’m still an active professional athlete and still not out,'” the 24-year-old shared, noting that he had heard from “hockey players, football players, and basketball players.”

“They reach out to Rachel [Reid], our writer, who forwards these friendly anonymous emails,” he said. Some would message privately via Instagram, he added. “And these are the messages that really land — you think: ‘Okay, on the one hand this is an entertaining, celebratory series, but on the other hand this hits some people right in the heart.'”

In the National Hockey League, the real North American ice hockey elite, only one player under contract with a team has come out: in 2021 Luke Prokop announced that he is gay (TheColu.mn reported). However, he did not break into the first team and remains in lower leagues. So far, no openly gay player has competed in an NHL game. In other countries there have been only a few coming-outs: Danish league player Jon Lee-Olsen spoke about his homosexuality in 2019 (TheColu.mn reported). (dk)
