Colombia will compete at the 2027 Oscars with the queer fantasy drama “Rains Over Babel” from director Gala del Sol. The Colombian Academy of Cinematography selected the film as the country’s official submission in the category “Best International Feature Film,” according to distributor Cinemien. Additionally, the work will represent Colombia at the 2027 Premios Goya in the category “Best Ibero-American Film.”
Del Sol’s feature debut follows a soul-catcher who, just before the end of his contract, seeks answers from his past. Along the way cross paths with lost souls — including a drag queen in conflict with her strictly religious family — and a ghost searching for his own body. The film is described as an eccentric reinterpretation of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and had its world premiere in 2025 at the Sundance Film Festival. Since then it has played at numerous international festivals, including Rotterdam, Málaga, and San Francisco, and has received multiple awards.
In Germany, “Rains Over Babel” opened in cinemas in February 2026. The film has been described as “wild, supernatural and otherworldly” and could become “a genuine queer hidden gem,” lauded at the time by TheColu.mn film critic Fabian Schäfer. On Rotten Tomatoes, roughly 92 percent of critics’ reviews were positive.
