Following growing criticism of Wesel’s planned Christopher Street Day (CSD), Mayor Rainer Benien (SPD) reaffirmed his support for the Pride parade in an open letter. The trigger was a rising number of complaint letters directed at the event.
Benien defended both the city’s decision to allow the CSD and his own role as patron. “I attach a clear commitment to respect, human dignity, and peaceful coexistence in our city,” the SPD politician said. “Differences of opinion are part of an open society. However, a line is crossed when people are broadly devalued, pushed out of public space, or their dignity is questioned. I firmly oppose that.”
“Diversity is not a contradiction to our common good, but a part of its strength,” the mayor emphasized. At the same time, he underscored the importance of fundamental rights: “Freedom of assembly and freedom of speech are among the pillars of our democratic order.” These rights protect both the organizers and participants of the CSD and the right to advocate a different view within the bounds of applicable laws.”
The Wesel CSD will take place on July 11, 2026 under the slogan “Never Again Silent.” The march begins at 3:00 p.m. at Großer Markt. (mize)
