In a hotel in Unterhaching, a town just outside Munich in Upper Bavaria, an anti-gay hate-motivated assault targeted a young gay couple in the early hours of Monday. A 21-year-old was injured and taken to a hospital, police said on Tuesday.
According to authorities, at approximately 4:45 a.m., a 51-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man forced their way into the hotel room occupied by two Bulgarians, aged 21 and 23. The suspects are described as relatives of the 23-year-old; the assailant is believed to be his twin brother.
A hotel employee called the police
The 51-year-old repeatedly stabbed toward the 21-year-old with a pair of scissors, while the 23-year-old suspect struck him with fists and a frying pan, investigators said. Authorities currently believe the attack had a homophobic motive.
A hotel employee, alerted by cries for help, called emergency services. The attackers fled before police arrived. They were later arrested at their home in Munich.
Investigations for aggravated bodily harm
The 21-year-old sustained minor injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to a hospital. His 23-year-old partner also sustained minor injuries but did not require additional medical care.
Both suspects are under investigation for aggravated bodily harm. After police procedures concluded, they were released. The ongoing inquiry has been taken over by the responsible detective division.
