Unknown individuals threw firecrackers and eggs at a residential building in Goldkronach, a town in Upper Franconia. The state protection unit for hate crimes of the Bayreuth Criminal Police is investigating for attempted property damage.
According to police, the incident occurred on the night from Saturday to Sunday, around 11:00 p.m. Residents first heard a loud bang outside the property on Hauptstraße, which was presumably caused by a firecracker. The next morning, several eggs were found splattered on the house facade and on a window. According to current findings, no property damage was recorded.
In the upper floor, the tenant Fabien Popp had hung a rainbow flag. The investigators and the residents suspect that the building was selected deliberately because of its statement in support of LGBTQ rights. Eyewitnesses reported a group of youths leaving in the direction of Depser Straße at the time of the act.
The bang was so loud that Popp said she felt a pressure wave. The Berlin-based regional newspaper quoted her as saying this after the incident. The Pride flag should remain on the house despite what happened. “If I take it down now, then the people who threw the eggs have won — at least in their view,” the young transgender woman, who sits on the state board of The Left in Bavaria as well as in the queer working group Die Linke, told the regional newspaper.
The Criminal Investigation Department asks witnesses who observed suspicious activity or who can provide information about the crime to contact (0921) 506-0.
