Openly Gay Wrestler Makes WWE History

The American wrestler Aaron Rourke has sparked a buzz in the wrestling world with a historic title win. Competing under the ring name “Evil Gay,” the pro wrestler became the first openly gay wrestler to win a WWE singles championship.

Rourke captured the title on March 18 during the WWE Evolve show, a WWE-format developmental program, by defeating Jackson Drake. With the victory, he claimed the Evolve Championship and sent a bold message for greater visibility of queer athletes in wrestling.

The 30-year-old joined WWE’s development program “Independent Development” at the end of 2024 and was its first openly gay wrestler. Earlier, he had already made a name for himself on the independent scene under his provocative ring name.

His title win is regarded as a milestone: While queer athletes such as Darren Young and Pat Patterson had already won titles in WWE, Rourke is the first openly gay fighter to win a singles title.

The Evolve show is seen as a springboard to larger WWE formats

After the match, Rourke was emotional and spoke of a long and arduous journey. On social media, he thanked supporters and called the triumph “only the beginning.”

The title win could also represent the next step in his athletic career: The Evolve show is seen as a springboard to larger WWE formats such as NXT. Industry observers therefore expect further rise for the wrestler.
