1990s Queer Berlin: Premiere of “We Are Alive”

The new musical from the hit duo Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer, “We’re Alive — The Berlin Musical,” premieres this Saturday evening at the Theater des Westens. It takes audiences on a time-travel journey to 1990s Berlin, exploring euphoria and death — and offering a tribute to the late singer Anna R., who formed the Rosenstolz duo with Peter Plate.

It is the fifth collaborative musical from the writers-composers Plate and Sommer, who also share the theater’s artistic leadership. For the first time, the core idea comes from the gay composer duo themselves. It marks, they say, their most personal project to date, drawing on their own experiences and memories, following works such as Ku’damm 56, Romeo & Juliet — Love Is Everything, and Die Amme.

“We’re Alive” is described as a monument and a tribute to music, stories, and emotions, according to the show’s program. It also remembers all those who died of AIDS in the 1990s. For the premiere, many celebrities from the music and cultural spheres are expected on the red carpet and for the afterparty.
