The Left: Why Isn’t Lin Lindner in the Bundestag Yet?

In fact, Lin Lindner should have been sitting in the German Bundestag for The Left for quite some time. The nonbinary trans person from Trier was named in August 2025 by the party as the successor for the gravely ill Mainz-based social medicine physician Gerhard Trabert, who cannot take up the Bundestag seat The Left had won for health reasons (TheColu.mn reported).

“It has become clear that the family, although appointed by the district court as legal guardian, is not authorized to declare a resignation from the office on behalf of him,” a spokesperson for the party in Berlin said. And a personal statement from Gerhard Trabert is currently not possible for health reasons. Trabert (69) had suffered several strokes.

What happens next?

“All parties want to implement the renunciation of the mandate quickly and transparently for everyone. We are working together to find a legally sound and respectful solution,” the party spokesperson continued. They are committed to reaching a fast resolution— in the interests of Trabert, his family, and the political responsibility the party bears.

Lin Lindner (they/them) is 32 years old, the head of The Left in Trier, a member of the state executive committee in Rhineland-Palatinate, and had run in third place on the Rhineland-Palatinate state list for the Bundestag. “What motivates me most is the palpable shift to the right in our country,” the nonbinary trans person wrote in the 2024 application. “It threatens not only the rights of minorities but our freedom as a whole. When hate and incitement set the tone, there is no room left for solidarity and progress. We cannot allow that. I want to work to ensure we take a firm stance—even against racism, antifeminism, and exclusion.”
