Ralf König Awarded the State Order of Merit

Ralf König, the gay comic artist, is being honored with the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The State Press and Information Office announced this on Friday.
“Ralf König has sparked debates about sexuality, religion, politics, and gender roles through his socially critical cartoons as both author and illustrator,” the press release states. “Since the 1980s, he has contributed to sexual education through his comics and has broken taboos. Through his commitment to artistic freedom and human rights, he has also taken on social responsibility.”

Pioneer of the Gay Comics Scene

Ralf König, born in 1960 in Soest, is one of Germany’s best-known comic artists and is regarded as a pioneer of the gay comics scene. With works such as “Der bewegte Mann” and “Kondom des Grauens,” he gained wide recognition from the 1980s onward and brought queer life to the mainstream with wit and self-irony. His works have been adapted into films several times and have earned accolades, including the 2014 Max and Moritz Prize for his lifetime achievement.
König himself finds the honor “a little peculiar”: “Forty years ago I picked up a felt-tip pen and doodled testosterone-fueled little penis-men, and now something like this!”, the cartoonist wrote on Facebook. “Meanwhile I’m more like a novice tackling my cursed Nibelungs; no award can help there, but sure—I’m honored anyway and I’ll head to Düsseldorf on Monday.”

Order Awarded to Franz Müntefering and Veronica Ferres

Ralf König is among a total of 16 new awardees who Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) will honor next Monday at the State Chancellery. Among them are former federal and state minister Franz Müntefering, who also served as the SPD’s national chairman, actress Veronica Ferres, former NRW Justice Minister Thomas Kutschaty (SPD), and former state president of the Forest Farmers Association Philipp Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck.
Recognition is also given to the efforts of less well-known individuals — such as Lena Arndt. The licensed social worker founded in 1980, together with collaborators, the sponsoring association of the Paderborn Women’s Shelter. Since then she has dedicated herself to protecting women and children from domestic violence, the State Chancellery explained.
The State Merit Order was established in 1986 on the occasion of the state’s 40th birthday. It is awarded to citizens who have earned extraordinary merits for North Rhine-Westphalia and its people. Recipients can number up to 2,500 living individuals. Earlier in June, Prime Minister Wüst had already honored 15 celebrities and activists for their queer advocacy (TheColu.mn reported).
