Manchester United Player Suspended for Six Games After Homophobic Outburst

Manchester United’s academy prospect Jack Fletcher has been suspended for six matches for a homophobic insult. The Football Association (FA) announced that the 18-year-old midfielder must also pay a fine of £1,500 (about €1,720, or roughly $1,900).

The incident occurred in October during Manchester United’s Under-21 clash with Barnsley in the EFL Cup. Fletcher directed the remark “gay boy” at an opponent. The referee heard the comment and sent the player off in the 62nd minute.

The FA treated the incident as an aggravated offense because the insult referenced sexual orientation. Fletcher admitted the misconduct and accepted the penalty. In addition to the suspension and fine, he was also ordered to complete mandatory anti-discrimination training.

Player apologizes

In a statement, the player publicly apologized. He said the word was spoken “in the heat of the moment” and did not reflect his beliefs. He also acknowledged that such language is “unacceptable.” Specifically, the opponent is said to have knocked him to the ground once and stepped on his Achilles area once, and also uttered a remark about Fletcher’s family. Fletcher’s response was: “You seem to know a lot about me. Are you a gay boy?”

Although the disciplinary panel accepted his claim that he did not intend the wording as a homophobic insult, it concluded that the phrasing nonetheless violated FA rules and warranted a substantial sanction. Manchester United said they are already working with Fletcher to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and its effects. The club also emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Fletcher, the son of former United star Darren Fletcher, is regarded as one of the club’s promising young talents and has recently begun to feature for the senior squad in England’s top division. The ban applies to domestic matches.

Rainbow Devils, the club’s LGBTQ supporters group, welcomed the player’s apology. At the same time, they stressed that homophobic language has no place in football—regardless of intended meaning: “Words count and words hurt.”
