A Queer Couple Fights the LGBTQ Rights Rollback in the U.S.

With his novel “Transinternetwork Foundation – The Story of Aaron and Tamara,” Tom Real crafts a narrative that blends a personal romance with political dystopia. At its center are Aaron, a successful businessman, and Tamara, a transgender woman whose life is marked by discrimination, violence, and structural exclusion. From their encounter, not only does a relationship develop, but also the resolve to actively combat the disenfranchisement of queer people.

The plot opens in a dilapidated neighborhood where Tamara lives each day fearing for her safety. When Aaron shields her from a mugging, a connection forms that will change both of them in lasting ways. Tamara recounts the rejection she faced from her own family, educational barriers, and the constant fear of violence — experiences that shape her identity as much as her desire for a self-determined life. Aaron becomes her pillar of support, yet also a mirror of society’s prejudices.

A turning point comes in a restaurant when Tamara witnesses a trans woman being discriminated against and expelled. Her ensuing coming out leads to a rupture with Aaron, who is initially overwhelmed by her past and her identity. Only after this separation does he begin to question his own patterns of thought. Their renewed closeness marks the start of a shared political engagement.

A Wedding as a Political Statement

From this impulse, Aaron and Tamara establish the Transinternetwork Foundation. The foundation is meant to offer protection, work, education, and opportunities to queer people — as a counter-model to a hostile environment. As their success grows, so do envy, malice, and open hostility. To signal solidarity, they inaugurate the annual “Tammy” Awards, which honor individuals who advocate for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition, the T.I.N. Academy emerges, a school designed to provide a safe and inclusive learning space.

The novel culminates in the wedding of Aaron and Tamara, which is both a celebration and a political statement. Yet this moment is not free of clouds: a firebombing at the academy threatens everything they have built. Further catastrophes, including during an awards ceremony, put the foundation’s future in question. Giving up, however, is not an option for the protagonists. The idea of adoption and new political plans concludes a story that, despite all setbacks, remains anchored in perseverance.

Set within a scenario that closely mirrors contemporary America, state repression, systemic restrictions on queer rights, and the role of the immigration authority ICE form the stark backdrop. By focusing on individual fates, this political reality becomes not abstract but emotionally tangible.

Tom Real ties the novel to his core interest in human biographies. Observations from private and professional life weave into the narrative, alongside cross-genre elements. “Transinternetwork Foundation – The Story of Aaron and Tamara” is thus a hybrid of romance, social novel, and a warning about a development that no longer feels purely fictional.
