Seven months ahead of Berlin’s state elections for the House of Representatives on September 20, the Berlin Greens are set to adopt their campaign program. About 180 delegates will gather this Saturday for a two-day party convention. The foundation is a roughly 130-page draft program, developed over the past months with the participation of numerous party members.
“Berlin is currently becoming grayer, harsher, and dirtier,” reads the preface of the draft program. The Greens attribute this to a “backsliding coalition” of the CDU and SPD. “We want it to remain colorful, buzzing, diverse, and livable in all districts,” says the party, which has been in opposition since 2023. Its priorities include stronger climate protection, affordable rents, and a transport transition away from fossil fuels.
In addition to expanding the public transit system (ÖPNV), the party calls for greater safety for riders on platforms and in trains, trams, and buses. “To guard against assaults and harassment, we want to test compartments for women, lesbians, inter*, non-binary, trans* and agender people (FLINTA*) in the subway and to expand the presence of security teams drawn from the police and BVG employees,” the draft program states.
Before the party conference, there were 1,200 amendment proposals, many of which will be discussed at the gathering. On Sunday afternoon, the campaign program is to be finally adopted.
