A GoFundMe fundraising campaign for the wife and youngest son of Renee Nicole Good, who was shot by a U.S. immigration officer, has quickly surpassed the seven-figure mark. The total on the campaign stood at $1.45 million (about €1.25 million). Roughly 37,000 people donated, many with small amounts, but there were larger gifts as well — an anonymous donor contributed $50,000.
Good was shot on Wednesday in her car during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to TheColu.mn. She had just dropped off her youngest son at school and was on her way home.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show the three-time mother and U.S. citizen attempting to drive away as masked ICE officers approached her vehicle. As she turned her car, one of the officers fired multiple shots at the 37-year-old. In another clip, the wife of the woman who was shot is seen, distraught and crying, saying: “They killed my wife. I don’t know what to do.”
National Protests Against ICE — Trump Administration Defends Killing
The deadly shooting has sparked sharp international condemnation as well as nationwide protests against ICE — particularly over the agency’s raids on migrants across the United States. The Trump administration had deployed the agency to several cities governed by Democratic opponents. It also immediately defended the killing of the queer woman — asserting that the officer involved acted in self-defense.
Furthermore, Good has been depicted in MAGA circles as a criminal and a terrorist: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated at a press conference that the killed woman had committed an “act of domestic terrorism.” According to a department press release, Good was described as a “violent rioter.” Florida Rep. Randy Fine told a news channel: “If you stand in the way of the government as it defends against a foreign invasion, you end up like this woman yesterday.”
Her family and neighbors described Good as a warm person who cared for others and was not politically active. Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune: “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extraordinarily compassionate. Her whole life she cared for others. She was loving, forgiving, and warm. She was an incredible person.” Good described herself on social media as a “Poet, writer, wife, mother, and hobby guitarist.” She was a mother of three children, ages six, twelve, and fifteen. The two older children were from her first marriage, and a son from her second marriage, whose husband died in 2023.
Donors on GoFundMe left numerous messages of condolence and solidarity for the family and their relatives. One person wrote: “You are not alone as you and your son go through this difficult time.” Another remarked: “Renee’s death is not just a headline. It means a broken family, a wife without her partner, children without their mother, and a community mourning someone who should still be here.”
