Gay Eroticism in Austria’s Salzkammergut

Kurt Walters, an American with Bavarian roots, has created new works in the temporary home he and his husband George found on Mondsee in the Austrian Salzkammergut.

Walters crafts in his paintings illustrious scenes that you would almost want to step into right away, so vivid and colorfully rendered they are. His references to various styles and forms from the Baroque and Neoclassicism are unmistakable, as is his admiration for the early masters of the Renaissance. He describes his approach as “ironic classical.” The new works, as always, reveal the artist’s obsession with detail.

Homoerotic Art by Homosexual Artists

Cozy farmhouses, fragrant bakeries, or picturesque cityscapes form the backdrop for thoughtful, whimsical scenes in an illustrative style. At first glance, postcard romance, colorful homeland fantasies. On a second look, refined compositions stand out, with nuances and lines of sight. Always in the frame: a magnificent protagonist, often with a piercing gaze — sometimes even bare-chested during tavern music. Subtle eroticism, inviting viewers to imagine the scene further.

The calendars from the Munich-based gallery Kunstbehandlung featuring painted erotic male motifs have a staple place on many walls every year. The new issues for 2026 by Kurt Walters, Luke Carter, Robert C. Rore, and Max Ströder (each 14 pages, 21 x 14.8 cm, fully four-color, spiral-bound) are now available for 10 euros each at kunstbehandlung.com. There, only homoerotic, contemporary art by homosexual artists is presented.

The majority of the works focus on depicting the male body, usually shown lightly clad or nude. On display and for sale are paintings, watercolors, drawings, fine art prints, as well as whole series by Munich painter and draftsman Robert C. Rore, while the other exhibited artists primarily concentrate on painting or photography. (dd/pm)
