Why “Kinky Boots” Belongs Under the Christmas Tree

Anyone still hunting for a Christmas gift that not only entertains but also makes a statement should take a look at this musical: “Kinky Boots – The Musical” is touring in its English-language original production for the first time through Germany and Switzerland, making it an ideal last-minute gift for LGBTQ+ people and allies alike.

Based on a true story, “Kinky Boots” follows Charlie Price as he inherits a slipping‑toward-ruin men’s shoe factory and, with the help of drag queen Lola, reinvents its future. The idea: high heels that not only make drag performers look glamorous but are sturdy enough to hold up on stage. What starts as a business pivot quickly grows into a tale about tolerance, solidarity, and the courage to question social norms.

High Heels, Heart and Attitude

That this musical holds a special place for many queer people isn’t just about Lola’s character. It’s driven by its creative core: the music by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, the book by Harvey Fierstein, one of the most important openly gay playwrights in American theater. Together they’ve crafted a piece that doesn’t explain diversity but celebrates it — loud, colorful, and deeply moving.
The success proves them right: “Kinky Boots” has earned its share of accolades on Broadway and London’s West End, including multiple Tony and Olivier Awards as well as a Grammy. Critics praised especially the infectious energy and the warm-hearted spirit of the show.

From December 17, 2025 through January 17, 2026, the musical will be shown in Berlin, with performances in Oberhausen from January 20 to February 1, 2026. It is performed in English, with German surtitles in Germany — so it’s accessible for musical fans who aren’t perfect in English. Tickets start at around 40 euros, which adds to its appeal as an affordable gift. All in all: if you want to give at Christmas more than consumer goods — visibility, empowerment and a night full of feel-good queer energy — “Kinky Boots” is a slam dunk. High Heels, Heart and Attitude — what more could you want under the Christmas tree? (dd/pm)
