Hulu, the U.S. streaming service owned by the Disney conglomerate, has canceled the sitcom Mid-Century Modern after only one season. The news came from series creator and producer Max Mutchnick on his Instagram page on Monday. The show has been streaming in Germany on Disney+ since April.
“Ten great episodes… Not enough,” Mutchnick commented, who, along with colleague David Kohan, also produced the hit sitcom Will & Grace. “But we loved making every single episode of the series. We will miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

The series revolved around three close gay friends “of a certain age,” as Hulu had explained ahead of the premiere. After an unexpected death, the trio decides to spend their twilight years together in Palm Springs, where the wealthiest of them lives with his mother. Because of the plot parallels, Mid-Century Modern was repeatedly likened to The Golden Girls (1985-1992).
Lead actress died before the end of the first season
The main cast included Nathan Lane (“The Birdcage”) as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) as Jerry Frank, and Nathan Lee Graham (“Zoolander”) as Arthur Broussard. The late Linda Lavin (“Alice”), who passed away in late 2024, appeared in her final role as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother, in eight episodes. After her sudden death, her character also died in the ninth episode of the sitcom.

“Mid-Century Modern” was warmly received by television critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, 88 percent of reviews were positive. However, the show received only a relatively small number of major nominations at the big television awards.
Additionally, audience appeal apparently wasn’t strong enough. While Hulu does not release viewership numbers, “Mid-Century Modern” never managed to crack the Top 10 on the official streaming charts that track the activity across the major U.S. streaming services.
