Berlinale Showcases Unreleased David Bowie Concert Footage

The Berlinale has announced a world premiere: at its upcoming edition, it will screen previously unreleased concert footage from pop icon David Bowie (1947-2016). Under the title “David Bowie “Stage”” the festival is billing an immersive concert experience. The term “immersive” describes an event that uses media to pull you into an interactive world.

The production is based on newly discovered and restored film material from the Isolar II World Tour of 1978. Back then, Bowie performed pieces from his album “Heroes,” which he recorded entirely in Berlin.

For the world premiere during the Berlinale’s opening weekend in mid-February, audiences will have the chance to view the show on three screens and on transparent LED displays, combined with a “live light and sound experience,” the festival said. Viewers should feel as if they’re at the center of a Bowie live concert.

Filmmaker Brett Morgen discovered the original camera negatives while working on his 2022 Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream.” Tickets are expected to go on sale in an initial pre-sale on the Eventim platform as early as this Wednesday, October 28. The general pre-sale will begin on Friday.

Berlin is closely tied to the British singer’s life story, with the city, from 1976 to roughly 1979, repeatedly appearing as a focal point in his biography. He came to the city behind the Berlin Wall to escape various pressures, including battling drug issues, and produced some of his legendary music there. The Berlinale is slated to run from February 10 to 21, 2027.
