Charli XCX to Guest Star in Martin Scorsese’s Next Film

Charli xcx (34) stands before Martin Scorsese (83) in front of the camera. According to the U.S. trade publication Variety, citing industry insiders, the singer has a cameo in “What Happens at Night,” the Oscar-winning director’s new film. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are also part of the project.

Which character the 34-year-old will portray remains under wraps for now. An official release date for the project has not been announced yet. The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.

Eerie Encounters in the Snow

The Gothic-psychodrama is based on the eponymous novel by openly gay American author Peter Cameron from 2020 (in German: “Was geschieht in der Nacht”). At the center is an American couple who travel to a snowbound European town to adopt a baby. In their hotel they encounter a string of peculiar characters, including a chanteuse and a faith healer. As the story unfolds, the boundaries between reality and the uncanny gradually blur. The book also explores several queer themes.

A first look at the shoot had already emerged in March: DiCaprio posted a photo on Instagram showing him and Lawrence walking hand in hand before a snowy backdrop. For Scorsese, this marks his first project since the ten-time Oscar-nominated “Killers of the Flower Moon” from 2023, also starring DiCaprio.

Collaboration between Charli XCX and Martin Scorsese
The connection between Charli XCX and Martin Scorsese isn’t new: The director graced the cover of her July-released album “Music, Fashion, Film.” The black-and-white photo shows him alongside musician John Cale and designer Marc Jacobs in a kitchen. Each of the three represents a form of art from the album title.

That the pop star also wants to carve out a place in cinema is not new either. Over the past two years, she has appeared in seven films in various roles, including in the mockumentary “The Moment” about the hoopla surrounding her successful album “Brat,” “100 Nights of Hero,” “I Want Your Sex,” and “Faces of Death.” In February, Charli XCX also contributed the soundtrack to Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.” (spot)
