Menopause is more individualized and multifaceted than public debate often suggests. Too often it’s reduced to hot flashes and weight gain. Other accompanying symptoms aren’t even linked to this life phase: joint pain, brain fog, sleep disturbances, mood dips, or altered sexuality. Such complaints can weigh on daily life and affect quality of life for years.
Prof. Dr. med. Petra Stute explains in “Welcome to the Menopause” what lies behind the hormonal changes. The gynecologist and scientist tackles common myths about hormone therapies and lays out the possibilities and limits of different treatment approaches. This includes herbal preparations, bioidentical hormones, and other medicinal options.
Sexuality and Self-Care
The guide is intended to help readers understand the changes and place possible actions within a framework of scientific knowledge. The diverse courses of menopause serve as a starting point: symptoms and needs can vary widely from one woman to another.
Stute’s approach also considers everyday life. Nutrition, movement, and targeted training are discussed, as is understanding one’s own emotional needs. Another area of focus is changes in sexuality and what they mean for partnerships.
“Welcome to the Menopause” (Amazon affiliate link) addresses how women can navigate these years informed and empowered. Practical guidance on physical well-being and self-care complements the medical explanations. The text also touches on a potential reorientation in this phase of life.
Stute leads the Gynecologic Endocrinology and Menopause Center at the University Hospital for Women’s Health in Bern. She is President of the European Menopause and Andropause Society (EMAS) and a board member of the European Society of Gynecology (ESG). She has also founded the non-profit organization MenoQueens, which aims to support and accompany women during menopause. (dd/pm)
