Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s theaters are inviting people to sing together in public spaces ahead of the state elections. “Choirs, ensembles, artists, clubs, visitors and residents will make audible what this state stands for: the togetherness of the people who live here,” reads a joint statement. According to the organizers, all public theaters are participating.
The events are planned for September 5, 7, 12, and 13, during open-house days, at markets, or during season-opening celebrations. Democracy is not a spectator space, but “lives on the fact that we all raise our voices.” Each individual voice remains audible. “And yet something larger than any single voice emerges.” That is democracy, the organizers said.
With the initiative, the venues also want to highlight the importance of artistic freedom. “Art can make contradictions visible, pose questions, and change perspectives. It needs freedom to do so,” the statement says. As places of encounter and open debate, they advocate for “a society in which origin, skin color, gender, religion, sexual identity, or political conviction should never be grounds for exclusion or contempt.”
