Sandra Hüller takes on another male role in her next major film project. As announced by the production company Komplizen Film, the actress will portray the writer himself in the adaptation of Wolfgang Herrndorf’s autobiographical book “Arbeit und Struktur.” The film is directed by Maria Schrader (“She Said,” “Ich bin dein Mensch”), who also co-writes the screenplay with Jan Schomburg. Filming is slated to begin in early 2027, with a theatrical release planned for 2028 in Germany, France, and Italy.
Herrndorf’s book chronicles the author’s final years after a diagnosis of an incurable brain tumor. It originated from a blog the writer started publishing in 2010 and was published posthumously in 2013 by Rowohlt Berlin Verlag. Herrndorf had previously become known for his queer novel “Tschick,” the story of a summer journey undertaken by two unequal youngsters.
For Hüller, this is not her first time playing a man: In the historical drama “Rose” by Markus Schleinzer, she portrayed a war veteran who pretended to be a man to take over an abandoned estate (TheColu.mn reported). She later received the Silver Bear at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (TheColu.mn reported).
Regarding the new role, Hüller stated in a press release that Herrndorf’s writing has lingered with her since their first encounter: “His texts surprise, unsettle, and comfort at the same time.” The film is produced by Komplizen Film in coproduction with Studiocanal, ZDF, and Haut et Court.
