At Amalie-Dietrich-Platz in the Dresden district of Gorbitz, a 45-year-old transgender woman was brutally beaten by several men. The public prosecutor’s office and the Dresden Police Department announced this in a Friday press release.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 11 p.m. The transgender woman reportedly had been drinking with the men initially, but the mood turned sour. According to the police report, the 45-year-old was shoved, punched, and repeatedly kicked in the face. The attackers allegedly then stole the transgender woman’s backpack along with her personal ID. Amalie-Dietrich-Platz is known in Dresden as a crime hotspot.
Broken nose and a cheekbone fracture
The transgender woman sustained a nasal bone fracture and a cheekbone fracture in the assault and required inpatient hospital treatment. She has since been discharged from the hospital.
The investigators are considering a possible hate-crime background: “Based on the current state of the investigation, there is substantial reason to believe that the act could have had a transphobic motive underlying it,” the public prosecutor’s office and the police said.
Two suspects arrested
Two of the three suspects — a 20-year-old and a 29-year-old, both German — were identified at the scene and taken into custody during the night of the assault. The Dresden District Court issued detention orders against both on August 27, at the request of the public prosecutor; they have remained in custody and have not commented on the charges. Both men have prior records, including one for prohibited Nazi symbolism.
The search for the third attacker continues. The Dresden Police Department is asking witnesses who can provide information about the crime or the still unknown third participant to call (0351) 483 22 33.
