Alexander Skarsgård Turns 50: Hollywood’s Versatile Swedish Star

He comes from one of Europe’s most famous acting dynasties — a family that has left its mark on Hollywood as well — and captivates with his near-flawless, almost-too-perfect looks at a height of 6’4″ (1.94 meters), a fondness for dark roles, and a sense of humor that shines in interviews and in many of his performances.

Today, the Swedish-born Hollywood star Alexander Skarsgård celebrates his 50th birthday. The arc of his illustrious career shows no sign of slowing down.

His father Stellan Skarsgård is also a world star

Alexander Skarsgård was born into acting. His father, Stellan (75), a titan of European cinema, achieved his international breakthrough with the 1996 classic “Breaking the Waves.” It was only in that year that he received an Oscar nomination.

Three of his brothers also work as actors. The one who’s probably best known beside Alexander is Bill (36), who portrayed Pennywise the clown in the Stephen King adaptation “It.”

Yet, according to his own statements, Alexander Skarsgård initially pulled away from acting. He had already acted in Sweden at the age of 13, a role that brought him some early fame. But the spotlight proved to be too much.

When he was about 20, he thought to himself: “My father is an actor, he’s totally happy with it — maybe I should give it a try.” Because, as he told the British newspaper The Guardian, he feared: “If I don’t try it now, there’s a risk I’ll look back in 30 or 40 years and think: ‘Why didn’t I do it? What an idiot!'”

“True Blood” gave him many gay fans

A blessing for the acting world. Skarsgård first drew attention in HBO’s vampire series “True Blood” (2008–2014). There he appeared shirtless and incredibly sexy. His vampire character, Eric Northman — and the way he played him — drew a large following in the gay community, partly because Eric pursued humans just as much as he pursued vampires, regardless of gender.

That Skarsgård appeared in Lady Gaga’s 2009 music video “Paparazzi” cemented his cult status within the community. There he plays the pop star’s friend or lover. When he betrays his beloved and severely injures her, she exacts revenge by slipping deadly poison into his drink and then herself calls the police to be arrested for the murder, ensuring maximum media coverage.

In 2016 he also appeared as Tarzan in the blockbuster “The Legend of Tarzan” (again, shirtless). The film proved not particularly successful at the box office. Skarsgård himself didn’t seem to enjoy the experience, either. “Nine months that were just gym, work, and bed. I didn’t touch a drop of alcohol. Like a robot,” he recalled to The Guardian about that experience.

Emmy Award for his intense performance in “Big Little Lies”

More often, what has captivated audiences are Skarsgård’s smaller roles — such as his recent portrayal of a dominant gay biker in the acclaimed queer romantic comedy “Pillion” or as a drunk cop in the cop comedy “Dirty Cops — War on Everyone.”

Among his greatest successes is also his performance in the HBO series “Big Little Lies.” For his portrayal of Nicole Kidman’s charming yet sociopathic husband, he earned an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Most recently, he impressed as an AI robot who hacks his own programming in the sci‑fi comedy series “Murderbot” from Apple TV.

He keeps his private life tightly under wraps. “Yes, I don’t talk much about it, and that’s a way to protect it,” he once said about his love life. “When I was a kid, my father handled it the same way.”

In interviews with the Swede, his quick wit shines through. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. “I’m incredibly lucky and blessed to be where I am,” he once said. “I have friends who are far better actors than I am and who can’t find work.”
