If Berlin residents could directly vote for their governing mayor, they would currently back the openly gay CDU candidate Stefan Evers, according to a survey reported by the Tagesspiegel, citing a poll conducted by the polling institute Civey.
According to the poll, 20 percent of respondents would vote for Evers. Behind Evers in second place is AfD’s top candidate Kristin Brinker. Her result is lower than her party’s share in the last Civey poll, with the AfD at 18 percent then and Brinker at 15.
SPD’s top candidate Steffen Krach follows with 14 percent and, according to the survey, fares slightly better than his party (12 percent). Left party candidate Elif Eralp, whose party leads in many polls, manages only 11 percent and thus sits in fourth place. The openly gay Green candidate Werner Graf earns 9 percent, placing him eight percentage points behind the Greens’ own result (17 percent).
A relative majority of 24 percent of respondents would not directly vote for any of the top candidates. Another 7 percent indicated they were still undecided (“Don’t know”).
Around 2.5 million Berlin residents will be able to vote on September 20 in the elections for the state parliament and the district assemblies. The poll surveyed 1,500 eligible voters online between July 22 and August 7.
