Frankfurt Mayor Mike Josef: Queer Visibility Isn’t a Privilege

With a clear commitment to diversity and democracy, Frankfurt’s mayor Mike Josef (SPD) opened this year’s Rainbow Reception at the Römer. “Queer life is, of course, part of Frankfurt, because visibility is not a privilege,” Josef said Monday evening in the Kaisersaal, in front of representatives of the queer community and numerous volunteers from clubs and initiatives.
The event marks the 34th Christopher Street Day (CSD), this year under the motto “Democracy Needs No Alternative.” Josef spoke of a pledge to European values and pointed to developments in Frankfurt’s Hungarian sister city, Budapest. There, the CSD last year, despite state attempts to ban it, could take place with the support of Mayor Gergely Karácsony. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets then, Josef said. Frankfurt stood firmly at the side of its partner city.
“The CSD and everyone involved are fighting for our democracy and stand for diversity and social cohesion,” the mayor emphasized. Now, more than ever, confident demonstrations like the CSD are important. The broad presence and acceptance on the streets show that many people are advocating for safety, equality, and against exclusion. The Christopher Street Day is “more than a joyful party,” Josef continued — it is visibility, a safe space, and a political signal at the same time.

Sebastian Reggentin, the spokesperson for the CSD Frankfurt association, also spoke at the reception. “Democracy is one of the greatest gifts that people have ever given themselves,” he said. It must be defended today more than ever — which is why this year’s CSD is held under this motto.
The Frankfurt CSD has taken place since 1992 and forms the culmination of Pride Month in the city. From July 16 to 19, thousands of people from Frankfurt and the region are expected along the northern riverbank of the Main.
