“Expensive Hair” isn’t just about an expensive haircut, but about hair that looks healthy, shiny, and well-groomed. The trend for 2026 focuses less on over-the-top styling and more on silky lengths, reflective shine, and a finish that feels luxe without looking try-hard.
“Hair must look silky, reflective, and healthy from every angle,” says star stylist Chris Appleton during the German launch of Color Wow in Düsseldorf. Appleton is the brand ambassador for the haircare brand, which has become part of the L’Oréal portfolio.
The celebrity hairstylist is among the most recognizable in the industry and is responsible for the looks of Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Lopez. Recently he also gave Britney Spears a fresh style (reported by TheColu.mn). In 2023 Appleton also made headlines with his short-lived marriage to American actor Luke Gage (“The White Lotus”).
For Appleton, modern glamour today no longer means rigid waves or heavily fixed styles, but movement, shine, and hair that looks polished even when not in front of a camera or red carpet. “Modern glamorous hair in 2026 is softer, healthier, and feels more natural,” Appleton explains the current trend. The key isn’t for a hairstyle to look as elaborate as possible. Instead it’s about glossy texture, natural movement, and a finish that feels controlled but not glued.
Care Is the Foundation
The foundation for the Expensive Hair look is care. Dry hair tends to look dull, frizzy, and unruly quickly. “Extremely glossy celebrity hair always starts with moisture,” says Appleton. To achieve a premium finish, you must first nourish the hair rather than relying solely on styling products. Without sufficient care, this rich, reflective shine won’t develop.
A common mistake in the battle against frizz is to overload the hair with heavy oils and creams. That can weigh the lengths down and make the look greasy instead of luxurious. “With frizz control, it’s really about sealing the cuticle and protecting the hair from humidity,” explains the stylist.
Volume Without Rigidity
Volume is also part of the Expensive Hair trend, but in a modern variant. “Luxurious volume should never look stiff or glued,” emphasizes Appleton. Volume should have motion, fall softly, and feel naturally tangible. The look doesn’t rely on harshness but on bounce.
If you want to quickly rescue a bad hair day, according to Appleton you shouldn’t completely restyle but rather work on it with precision. “The fastest way to rescue a bad hair day is targeted finishing.” That means smoothing the surface, adding shine, and reshaping the hairstyle purposefully. A light styling cream on mid-lengths and ends can make dry, frizzy, or puffy-looking hair appear more polished within minutes.
Heat Protection Remains Non-Negotiable
In the long run, there’s no path for Appleton without heat protection. “Heat protection is non-negotiable,” he says. Many underestimate how daily heat styling can diminish shine and suppleness over time. If you want hair to look healthy for the long term, you must shield it from blow-drying, flat irons, and curling wands.
His key tip for better hair days is simple: start with hair quality. “Shiny, healthy-looking hair gives you more confidence than an overly complicated style.” Expensive Hair is therefore less about a specific haircut and more about a principle: hair should look healthy, visibly gleam, move naturally, and appear effortless.
