A white-and-blue Formula 1 car opens Sky’s original docuseries “Ralf & Étienne: We Say Yes”. Even the opening shots remind viewers that Ralf Schumacher was once one of the defining figures in the sport, even if he never matched the achievements of his brother Michael. Six Grand Prix wins still stand as a testament to a notable career. Schumacher was a driver who understood not only speed but the art of self-presentation. This became especially evident in his marriage to Cora Schumacher, which he later described as “classic.” In 2015, they divorced, accompanied by a highly publicized divorce battle.
While his public profile cooled in the years that followed, Cora remained in the spotlight through formats like “Let’s Dance” or the RTL reality show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! This media shift persisted until the evening of July 14, 2024, when a photo of Ralf Schumacher and his partner Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne appeared on social media — and the dynamics changed dramatically (TheColu.mn reported). The message was clear: “I love a man.” The post spread worldwide and thrust him back into the center of public attention, as homosexuality had historically been more of a taboo in Formula 1.
Back in the Spotlight After Coming Out
Since his public confession of love, Ralf Schumacher has returned to the limelight, not only as the face of a used-car broker’s advertising but also as a frequent guest on programs like “RTL Exclusiv.” The level of interest in him is as high as it has been in years, and the relationship between him and Étienne has become a fixture in the press. The news that the two now have their own docuseries following the lead-up to their wedding comes as little surprise. What seems tender at first glance also reveals shadows (more on that later).
The first episode begins by looking back on Schumacher’s eventful life: his athletic successes, his business acumen, and his activities in the wine and hotel industries. One might even mistake the opening for a business profile, had it not been for lines like: “A balanced, beautiful, happy relationship makes you into a different person.” The tone quickly veers into sentimentality, and the Ralf fans once knew displays new facets.
During Wedding Preparations, the Tone Grows Sharper
Viewers gain glimpses into the couple’s athletic routine, their “bachelor fridge,” and their seemingly harmonious life together. They talk about what they value in each other, how much they trust one another, and how perfectly they seem to fit. They want to crown their love with a wedding in Saint-Tropez and seek advice from Ralf’s son David and his wife Vivi in Salzburg. There, they debate whether “Navy” is truly the right suit color—and whether David can actually be the best man, given his packed schedule.
As the preparations intensify, the stress starts to show and the tone occasionally grows harsher. Even a helicopter shuttle for David as best man is floated—a reality that may feel unfamiliar to many, but is not out of reach in the world of Ralf Schumacher, whose wealth is estimated at around 100 million euros. Discussions about rings and surnames are far from resolved. The couple fears outsiders might speculate that Étienne simply wants to marry into a famous name—but they firmly deny it.
Infatuation and Vulnerability
And yes, the couple’s infatuation is palpable. Especially Étienne speaks repeatedly about how attractive he finds Ralf, coming across as almost bashful. With his broad grin and distinctive accent, he embodies the charming Frenchman—and one can’t help but think: Ralf has hit the jackpot! His insecurities about his own appearance make him relatable. He openly accompanies viewers to his facelift at the hospital, with Ralf by his side despite his own heavy memories.
Because the hospital also triggers painful memories — of his mother Elisabeth Schumacher, who died in April 2003 at the University Hospital in Cologne. And of his brother Michael’s serious ski accident, which on December 29, 2013, left him with a life-threatening traumatic brain injury in the French Alps. For Étienne, Ralf always wants to be there, and that is why he conquers his own memories to accompany him to the hospital.

Sharp Criticism of Ralf and Étienne
Yet as likable as the pair may appear, their personas aren’t without controversy. Ralf Schumacher allegedly criticized Lewis Hamilton for championing LGBT rights, calling Hamilton’s activism “dangerous” for Formula 1 in 2021. For many, this seems inconsistent with how openly he now embraces his sexuality and profits from projects like this docuseries. Others argue that his current visibility does a lot of good and that past mistakes shouldn’t be held against him forever.
Controversy also surrounds Étienne. He spent years active for Marine Le Pen’s far-right party. He joined the Front National at 18, supported Jean Marie Le Pen in the 2007 presidential campaign, and later rose to municipal and regional councils. His involvement ranged from campaign assistance to serving as a departmental secretary. Many wonder how he could champion such politics as a queer person.
Pinkwashing Allegations and the Doc’s Impact
Some content creators, such as the TikToker “queergedacht,” label the doc as “pinkwashing.” It would be naive to claim that everything is “rainbows and sunshine.”
#ralfschumacher #queer #gay #schwul #reality

And yes, such voices are important. Sweeping the scandals of the past under the rug would be wrong. Whether the two leads do everything perfectly as people remains up for debate. Yet the doc raises visibility for queer life realities and helps normalize same-sex marriages.
At the same time, it provides entertaining and humorous moments — for instance when Étienne jokes about his own reflection after the facelift. If you’re looking for a doc to switch off, to laugh, and to marvel now and then, you can certainly tune in. However, as “queergedacht” emphasizes, don’t take everything blindly—even if Ralf Schumacher repeats a hundred times how blindly he trusts Étienne and how “perfect” everything is.
The four-part series “Ralf & Étienne: We Say Yes” is available starting May 21, 2026 on Sky and WOW, with new episodes airing Thursdays; the wedding-focused finale is on June 6, exclusive to Sky and WOW and also airing in a linear format on Sky One, each at 8:15 PM CET.
