Marina Abramović Exhibit: Gropius Bau Extends Evening Hours

Due to strong interest in the exhibition by performance artist Marina Abramović, the Gropius Bau in Berlin will extend its evening hours by one hour. “Because of the high demand, we are extending our opening hours,” the exhibition venue announced. Going forward, they will be open until 8 p.m., with Tuesdays remaining closed.
The exhibition “Balkan Erotic Epic” had opened two weeks ago, and at that time a long line formed. Abramović is one of the best-known performance artists in the world. In the show she engages with themes such as eroticism, politics, and the folklore of the Balkans.
The exhibit features both new and older works by her. You can see, for example, how in an earlier performance she carved a star into her abdomen or laid herself down in a burning installation until she lost consciousness. In her work, she also explores sexual energy as a form of life energy, as well as death, the political dimension of the body, and the Yugoslav Wars. She said it took her a long time to gain enough emotional distance from the Balkans to undertake the project.
In the coming weeks, the Gropius Bau will also present the queer exhibition “Peter Hujar / Liz Deschenes: Persistence of Vision”.
