US motorsport driver Daniel Dye has been suspended indefinitely after making homophobic remarks. The NASCAR driver mocked IndyCar driver David Malukas during a recently streamed livestream, imitated him in a high-pitched voice, and labeled his voice as gay. The wording of the video in question that circulated online was reported by the New York Times.
Dye was also temporarily sidelined by Kaulig Racing, the team he competes for in the Truck Series. NASCAR, the sanctioning body, ordered the 22-year-old to attend sensitivity training after the “inappropriate remarks,” according to a statement, before he could return.
Dye will “höhere Maßstäbe” an sich legen
Dye then asked David Malukas for an apology. “I spoke inappropriately and I understand why that upset some people,” he wrote on X. “I’m sorry for everyone who felt hurt by my words. This isn’t how I want to present myself. I have some close friends in the LGBTQ+ community, and I never want them to feel diminished by my remarks. That’s exactly why I should hold myself to higher standards.”

This is Dye’s second suspension
Dye had previously been suspended during his time in the ARCA touring car series. At 18, he was arrested at a Florida high school and charged with aggravated battery after delivering a blow to a fellow student’s groin. The driver said at the time that it had been “a game.” He was allowed to return to racing after the charge was downgraded from a felony to a misdemeanor.
