Singer Pink (46) will host this year’s Tony Awards. The producers of the prestigious theater awards confirmed the decision. The choice comes as a surprise: unlike many of her predecessors, Pink has no direct connection to the Broadway scene. Recently, stars like Cynthia Erivo (39) and Ariana DeBose (35) guided the gala—both have performed on Broadway and are Tony winners.
Pink herself was surprised by the invitation to host this year’s ceremony. On Instagram she wrote: “When I was asked if I would host the Tonys, I immediately thought: ‘I need to get my daughter’s permission first.’ I’ve never been to Broadway, and shouldn’t one be on Broadway to host? That seems fair and right. But when I asked my daughter, she was thrilled about the idea of getting a ticket to the Tonys. So I’m hosting the Tonys, and I’m really, really excited and very nervous, because my daughter is a tough audience!”
The singer called the gig “the greatest honor of my life” and added: “Broadway has shaped my life and the way I put together my own shows—it’s a community that’s supportive and open, full of talent and love. These people conjure something magical every day, and I can’t wait to celebrate them with the whole world.”
Although Pink has never performed on Broadway herself, two of her songs are currently used in different musicals: “Raise Your Glass” in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and “F*ckin’ Perfect” in “& Juliet.” This year’s ceremony takes place on Sunday, June 7, at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Nominations will be announced on May 5.
