The nationwide network “School of Diversity” has updated its quality standards for participating schools. The aim is to better support schools in creating an environment of acceptance and in countering bullying and violence against LGBTQ+ students, the network announced.
Experience from nearly two decades of network work has been incorporated into the new version, explained spokesperson Frank G. Pohl. Schools should pursue their development toward becoming a “School of Diversity” in a holistic manner, added spokesperson Christiane Morlock. This includes addressing sexual and gender diversity both in classroom instruction and in extracurricular activities, and providing regular professional development for teachers.
One of the new aspects, the network notes, is that schools should examine their own structures more thoroughly for potential discrimination—such as in forms, restroom use, or rules for field trips. Participation remains based on a self-commitment by the school community as well as ongoing work toward LGBTQ+-inclusive school development.
