Wednesday: Netflix Confirms Massive Success of Season 2

Since August 6, the first part of the second season of “Wednesday” has been streaming on Netflix. The first season had already become a massive hit for the streaming service in 2022. With more than 252 million views — that is, hours watched divided by the total runtime of the series — the first season sits at the top of Netflix’s all-time charts for the most-watched English-language series. Season two, four of its eight episodes having been released so far, can now build on that success.

Netflix announced that the new episodes, led by breakout star Jenna Ortega (22) in the lead role, accumulated a staggering 50 million views in the period from August 6 to August 12. This achievement places Season 2 as the second-most-watched weekly release among English-language Netflix series. Only narrowly surpassed is the launch of the first “Wednesday” season, which in 2022 drew about 50.1 million views within its first week of release, according to Variety.

What’s notable about the new “Wednesday” numbers, however, is that only four episodes — not all eight like in 2022 — have been released. When the remaining portion of Season 2 drops on September 3, the figures are likely to climb even higher.

The second half of the “Wednesday” season is expected to draw even more attention, because Lady Gaga will appear in a mysterious guest role as a teacher named Rosaline Rotwood. Among the show’s main cast is also gay actor Hunter Doohan, who recently revealed that he had previously hid his homosexuality during auditions (TheColu.mn reported).

No. 1 in 91 Countries

A separate record has already been set by the kickoff of the second “Wednesday” season. In 91 countries, the series sits at the top of the local charts for English-language series — including Germany and the United States. This has never before been achieved by any English-language Netflix series.

In second place on the international Netflix series charts last week was the first season of “Wednesday,” with 8.6 million global views, followed by the series “Untamed” starring Eric Bana (57), which totals 7.2 million views. (spot)
