Bundestag Couple Sepp Müller and Wolfgang Stefinger Wed

Two members of the German Bundestag, Sepp Müller (CDU) and Wolfgang Stefinger (CSU), announced on Monday via social media that they have gotten married. “From the ‘you and I’ to a ‘WE’ now,” the two politicians shared. “We said yes and are looking forward to everything that lies ahead.” “First the civil ceremony on 06/18 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wörlitz, then God’s blessing on 06/20 at the beautiful Wildbad Kreuth.” Müller is non-religious, Stefinger is Catholic.
They added: “Behind us lie the most emotional days of our lives, filled with pure happiness, laughter, and a deep sense of connection. Thanks to everyone who has accompanied us on our journey.” They also published several photos from the wedding. The pair represent the first same-sex marriage between two Bundestag members since marriage equality was legalized nearly nine years ago.

Müller and Stefinger had announced in January 2023 that they were in a relationship — which was also the coming-out of the two lawmakers (TheColu.mn reported). “11 percent of all couples meet at the workplace and fall in love,” they said at the time. “Sometimes colleagues become friends. From friendship, love grew for us. We are happy. #loveislove.”

Müller has been a member of the Bundestag since 2017 and has chaired the CDU state group for Saxony-Anhalt since 2021. Stefinger has served in the parliament since 2013 and has chaired the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development since May 2025. In 2017, he was one of only seven CSU MPs who voted in favor of marriage for all at the end of the legislative term. Forty-six of his party colleagues favored keeping the ban on marriage for gay and lesbian people.

Congratulations from the Union — even from a supporter of a ban on same-sex marriage

The newlyweds received well wishes from across democratic parties, especially from the Union: “Heartfelt congratulations and all the best on your shared life!” stated Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU). The Union’s Bundestag faction commented: “Oh how wonderful! Warmest congratulations.”

Even a politician who previously opposed same-sex marriages offered his best wishes: Former Federal Minister of the Interior Hans-Peter Friedrich (CSU) wished “all the best for your life path together.” He had voted against allowing couples like Müller or Stefinger to marry in 2017. (dk)
