“Wicked”-reunion in the West End: Ariana Grande (32) and Jonathan Bailey (37) will share the stage together in the summer of 2027 for a revival of the musical classic “Sunday in the Park with George,” according to Variety.
Ariana Grande Returns to the Stage After Nearly Two Decades
The actress and singer, along with the openly gay Bridgerton star, had hinted at the project previously in a joint Instagram post. In that image, they are pictured at the Art Institute of Chicago in front of Georges Seurat’s famed painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” That artwork inspired the musical Sunday in the Park with George, in which Grande and Bailey will now take the lead roles. The caption nods to the well-known song Finishing the Hat, suggesting “it has to be just right.”
The score for “Sunday in the Park with George” was written by the legendary Stephen Sondheim. The London revival will be directed by Marianne Elliott, a winner of both Tony and Olivier Awards. Tickets go on sale in May. Grande returns to the stage after nearly two decades and will make her first-ever appearance in London’s West End.
Timeless Musical Classic
“Sunday in the Park with George” follows the painter Georges Seurat (played by Jonathan Bailey) as he is driven by the urge to complete his masterpiece. Yet he grows increasingly estranged from the people around him— including his lover and muse Dot (portrayed by Ariana Grande).
