The queer EuroGames will be hosted in Frankfurt in 2028. For the four days of competition, the city announced that more than 4,000 participants across 20 disciplines are expected, following a decision by the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF). Frankfurt will host the event for the second time since 1995. This came after roughly a year-long bidding process.
In addition to the athletic events spread across the city, the city noted there would be, among other things, a close tie to the 2028 CSD and a publicly accessible accompanying program around the Römer, the historic town hall complex in the heart of Frankfurt.
Mayor and head of sports Mike Josef expressed satisfaction with the award. “A clear commitment to freedom and the active encouragement of diversity is more important today than ever,” declared the SPD politician. “We want to show all Frankfurt residents once again that queer people belong here—in sports, in our city, in the heart of Europe. Therefore, the EuroGames in Frankfurt am Main will be a joyful LGBTQ+-festival for all citizens. They are an invitation for queer and non-queer people alike to stand in solidarity and participate in each other’s worlds.”
The EuroGames have been held since 1992. Recent host cities include Vienna, Bern, and Copenhagen. This year’s Games took place from July 23 to 26 in Lyon.
