Juliane Bartel Media Award for “Barefaced”

The queer drama “Ungeschminkt” featuring Adele Neuhauser was honored on Tuesday evening in the “Fiction and Entertainment” category with the Juliane Bartel Media Prize. A total of prizes were awarded across four categories at the NDR state broadcasting center in Hannover.
At the center of the TV film “Ungeschminkt,” directed by Uli Brée, is Josefa, a transgender woman who returns to her Bavarian hometown after the death of her mother. For 35 years she had no contact with the rest of the family or her best friend from that time. The homecoming compels Josefa to address old wounds (film review by TheColu.mn). The drama can be streamed on the ARD Mediathek.
The Juliane Bartel Media Prize is awarded annually by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs. According to the ministry, the entries should address gender equality in serious or entertaining ways and reveal injustices. The prize is awarded in honor of journalist Juliane Bartel. She was a courageous and engaged journalist as well as a radio and television host, according to the ministry — at a time when few women held such roles.
The Juliane Bartel Media Prize totals €12,000. The prize money is distributed across the four categories, with €3,000 per category. The winners also receive a sculpture by artist Ulrike Enders.
