Kinky Boots at Munich’s Deutsches Theater

Sometimes all it takes to change the world is a pair of red boots. In the case of “Kinky Boots,” they’re boots with heels, glamour, and attitude—and they’re headed to Munich in fall 2025. The Deutsches Theater presents the acclaimed original Broadway production, a show that has long been more than a musical: a luminous advocacy for self-acceptance, tolerance, and the right to simply be yourself.

Cyndi Lauper, Harvey Fierstein, and the Power of High Heels

The story is based on true events: Charlie Price, heir to a traditional but bankrupt shoe factory, stumbles upon the drag queen Lola. What initially seems like a quirky coincidence becomes a brilliant business idea — sexy, sturdy boots for drag queens. Together they fight prejudice, small-town vibes, and their own doubts. From the rundown factory, it becomes a symbol of upheaval, friendship, and queer pride.
The story made its way to the big screen in 2005 and hit Broadway in 2013. Since then, “Kinky Boots” has celebrated worldwide success — with over 2,500 performances, six Tony Awards, three Olivier Awards, and a Grammy. Now the Deutsches Theater München brings the English-language original (with German surtitles) to Bavaria in this production for the first time.

For the electrifying soundtrack, none other than Cyndi Lauper — pop icon, feminist, and longtime LGBTI advocate — delivered the score. With songs like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” or “True Colors” she has defined entire generations. With “Kinky Boots” she wrote musical history and, in 2013, became the first woman ever to win the Tony Award for Best Original Score. “Kinky Boots is like a shot of happiness — and we could all use that right now,” Lauper says today.

Being Different Isn’t a Weakness

She was supported by theater legend Harvey Fierstein, the queer playwright behind successes like “La Cage aux Folles” and “Hairspray.” Together they created a show that swings between dazzling humor and real heart-pounding emotion — and its message is more timely than ever: being different isn’t a weakness, but a superpower.
In an era when diversity is being questioned again, “Kinky Boots” reads like a musical antidote: loud, glittering, and solidaristic. Or, as Lola sings: “Just be who you wanna be!”
Audiences can look forward to an energetic show — with spectacular choreography, big feelings, and plenty of red patent-leather boots. An evening that inspires courage, breaks boundaries, and leaves no one cold.
