In a time when queerphobic trends are on the rise worldwide and societal gains are being questioned, IU International University of Applied Sciences is sending a clear message of diversity, acceptance, and scholarly debate: On October 30, 2025, the “Queer Lecture Series — Perspectives from Politics & Practice” will launch—a nationwide, free online lecture series that makes queer life realities visible and opens a space for dialogue.
Experts from politics, practice, and academia will offer insights into current challenges and solutions—from queer political developments to historical perspectives and queer youth work. It is aimed at professionals, students, and anyone interested in social diversity and social justice.
Queer Realities in Focus
Already in the summer semester of 2025, IU opened an important discursive space within social work and beyond with the first Queer Lecture Series. The upcoming continuation in the current winter semester builds on that tradition — this time with a focus on political and practical perspectives.
“In times of rising polarization, we need scientifically grounded spaces where queer topics are not only analyzed but also discussed as a core part of professional responsibility,” say the organizers of the event series. “With the lecture series, we create a space for exchange and societal positioning, make discrimination visible, and develop approaches for greater participation and acceptance.”
Experienced speakers from Politics, Practice, and Scholarship
The kickoff event on Thursday, October 30, 2025 offers a political impulse: Sophie Koch, member of the Saxon state parliament and Federal Commissioner for the Acceptance of Sexual and Gender Diversity, will speak about current queer-political developments.
The lectures (schedule below) will take place every Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Attendance is free via Zoom for anyone interested.
