Sex for Shelter

Oslo is widely regarded as a model city of prosperity and a functioning welfare state. Nikolai Torgersen speaks through his debut novel Streets. A Life about the flip side of the Norwegian capital: a childhood and youth spent in poverty, amid violence, illness, drugs, and homelessness. These are experiences that scarcely fit the polished image of modern Norway.

A boy grows into a teenager, becomes a skater, and fights to hold his own between downfall and survival. He loses his mother first, then his father. He pays for a sleeping spot with sex. The question of when his own life will end hovers over him.

Torgersen shapes these experiences into an unsparing narrative. In doing so, the personal story merges with a broader social portrait: Streets. A Life centers on social origins, fragility, and the cruelty of a neoliberal class society that pushes its losers out of sight.

A Language for One’s Own Life

Even amid loss and neglect, there remains space for hope within this story. Hope lies in the effort to give voice to what was experienced. Torgersen shows how a damaged life can give rise to literature without softening its harshness.

Writing becomes a way to record experiences that stay hidden behind the affluence of the city. The life of an individual points to the social conditions in which he grows up and struggles to survive.

Streets. A Life is now available in German translation by Andreas Donat as a hardcover edition for €25 and as an e-book for €20.99 (Amazon affiliate link). A PDF sample of the book is available here.
