In Munich, a new rainbow-colored bench has been installed at Curt-Mezger-Platz. Mayor Mona Fuchs (Greens) and Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, the city’s head of the Building Department, unveiled the bench on Thursday alongside Ariane Rüdiger from the board of Forum Queeres Archiv München, as detailed in the city’s Rathaus Umschau.
The colorful bench is meant to send a clearly visible signal to Munich’s civic community that diversity, equality, and anti-discrimination are important priorities for the city.
“With the rainbow bench on Curt-Mezger-Platz, we are making a visible statement for acceptance and solidarity,” Fuchs said in the announcement. Munich is a city where people can be who they are and feel welcome and respected—regardless of whom they love or how they live. The bench embodies what the city stands for: “diversity, openness and a sense of community.” It should also be visible in the urban landscape.
The bench was donated by Forum Queeres Archiv München. It commemorates the lesbian writer Christa Reinig, who died in Munich in 2008.
