Queer Republicans Now Oppose Trans Rights

The board of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), which has acted since 1977 as the advocacy group for LGBTQ+ members within the United States Republican Party, has formally distanced itself from supporting transgender rights. This marks a formal policy pivot that had already become evident in recent years through increasingly anti-trans resolutions and rhetoric within the party.

LCR chairman Ross Hemminger explained the move in a Thursday column in a conservative magazine. According to him, the organization explicitly incorporated transgender rights into its charter in 2015 — “out of the belief that every adult should have the right to pursue their own happiness free from government interference, so long as this does not infringe on the inalienable rights of others.”

Allegedly Child-Endangering “Transgender Movement” Is Now the Enemy

Today, the landscape has shifted: “The transgender movement has shifted its focus away from adults entirely — nearly all of its efforts and those of allied interest groups are aimed at minors. They are pushing schools to teach a radical gender ideology; they want biological men to compete in women’s sports, regardless of the consequences; and perhaps most infuriatingly: they support gender-affirming treatments for minors, often without the knowledge or consent of parents, fully aware that these treatments are largely irreversible.”

Recently, the organization’s leadership had already defended restrictions on transgender individuals — including bans on treating transgender youths, even though studies show such treatments prevent mental health problems and suicidality within this group (TheColu.mn reported). The Republican group also supported barring transgender women from women’s sports, even though scientific studies show no athletic advantage for them over cisgender female athletes (TheColu.mn reported). With the current declaration, the association bids farewell to the principle of shared queer solidarity and aligns itself with the hardline, deeply anti-queer MAGA wing of the party. After all, there has been no transgender person on the LCR board for years — in the 17-member leadership, 16 white men sit on top.

Human Rights Campaign: LCR Splits the Community

Delphine Luneau, spokesperson for the queer organization Human Rights Campaign, sharply criticized the conservative group to LGBTQ Nation: “It’s new to us that they ever acted as though they cared about trans people. Splintering the LGBTQ+ community and playing us against each other is precisely what anti-equality forces want to see.” “Sacrificing a portion of a community in the hope of protecting the rest has never worked in history,” Luneau continued. “And it’s a tactic we should repudiate again today. Meanwhile, support for trans people within the broader LGBTQ+ population is overwhelmingly strong, because the vast majority understand that all of our freedoms are inextricably linked.”

The Trump administration has made transphobia one of its defining features — sometimes adopting a martial tone: in May, the White House announced actions to counter “pro-transgender” terrorism (TheColu.mn reported).
The Log Cabin Republicans have repeatedly faced criticism for downplaying the anti-queer stance of their party and for pushing the narrative that queer progressives are intent on exploiting children. On the eve of the 2024 presidential election, former head Charles Moran claimed that Trump’s Democratic rival Kamala Harris was a “crusader for a small but powerful LGBT-left clique that wants to sexualize children,” as TheColu.mn reported.
