Break Is Over: Jonathan Bailey Returns in Full Force

He is Hollywood’s newest superstar, a role model for an entire generation, and the face of brands like Martini: Jonathan Bailey (38) has long been using his fame for more than just his own career. The openly gay British actor is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the queer community. The key to his success: he has stayed true to himself. He recently spoke about it with pop legend Elton John (79).
The two stars met at the inaugural Elton John Impact Awards, where Bailey was honored. “I was very aware of the opportunities and boundaries for queer actors,” Bailey told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think when I was in my early twenties, it was clear to me that being gay would be an obstacle.”
Over time, however, he realized that he could only advance by staying himself and making no compromises: “I absolutely didn’t want to give up holding my boyfriend’s hand in public, and that’s something I instinctively felt very strongly,” the film star explained.

New project after acting hiatus

To devote himself to his Shameless Fund — a charity that supports the LGBTQ+ community — Jonathan Bailey even paused acting for a while. In September, he told GQ that during his break he planned to devote himself entirely to his charitable work.
That break now seems to be over: the film star is returning to the cameras with a new leading role. According to Variety, he is teaming up with Oscar-winner Natalie Portman (44) on “Pumping Black,” a psychological thriller set in the fiercely competitive and unforgiving world of professional cycling. Bailey probably won’t find the prep too hard; he stays bike-fit in real life and has even competed in triathlons. In 2018 he trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. With “Pumping Black,” Bailey now explores the darker side of extreme sport.

Jonathan Bailey Becomes a Crowd Magnet

With “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Wicked,” Jonathan Bailey has also made the leap to a crowd-pleasing presence on the big screen. His international breakthrough came when he played Viscount Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton.” Thus, the actor, who has been on stage since childhood, shifted from a celebrated theater star to a Hollywood darling and heartthrob.
Awards and honors followed as well: Bailey has already won a Laurence Olivier Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award. Time magazine included him in its Time 100 Next list of the world’s most influential rising talents; in 2025 People magazine crowned him Sexiest Man Alive — the first openly gay man to receive the title.
Jonathan Bailey Explores the Italian Lifestyle
Famous brands like Emporio Armani, Omega, Burberry, and eyewear label Cubitts have tapped him as a brand ambassador. He currently stars in a short film for the Italian aperitivo brand Martini, portraying the “Martini Man.” In the film, he explores Italy’s sense of living, elegance, and spontaneity, celebrating them with a Bianco Spritz.
Jonathan Bailey is expected to have plenty more to celebrate in the future: as a versatile actor in front of the camera and as a star who leverages his fame without losing himself. (spot)
