Hesse, Germany: 2.3% of Marriages Are Same-Sex

In the German state of Hesse, wedding bells rang a little more often in 2025, according to the State Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. A total of 25,937 couples tied the knot that year, up 252 from 2024.

2024 was the low-water mark for marriages in Hessen, the statistics show, the lowest since records began in 1946.

In 2025 there were 594 same-sex weddings — 311 among male couples and 283 among female couples. That brought the overall number of LGBTQ marriages to 30 fewer than in 2024. The share of gay and lesbian marriages stood at 2.3 percent of all weddings, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous year.

Couples Favor Spring and Summer

In 2025, as in 2024, August was particularly popular among couples tying the knot in Hessen, with a total of 3,602 weddings. May (3,597) and June (2,924) also saw high numbers. The most popular wedding date of the year was June 6. January recorded the fewest weddings, with 742.
