Helena Bonham Carter Probably Not in The White Lotus

Shortly after production began on the fourth season of the U.S. series “The White Lotus,” British actress Helena Bonham Carter (59) exited the cast, according to reports from entertainment trade outlets. “It had become clear that the character Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter didn’t fit on set,” stated HBO in a press release cited by several other U.S. industry outlets.

“The role has since been reconsidered and is currently being rewritten and recast in the coming weeks,” the statement continued. White—the creator of the hit series—along with HBO and the producers are saddened not to be able to work with the “legendary actress,” but remain big fans of the former “Harry Potter” star and hope for a future collaboration on another project.

The fourth season of the social satire about the staff and guests of a fictional hotel chain is set in France (TheColu.mn reported). In the first three installments, the action unfolded in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand. With her appearances in the first two seasons, U.S. actress Jennifer Coolidge earned cult status as the extravagantly anxious Tanya McQuoid (“These gays, they’re trying to murder me”). For her portrayal she has won two Emmys and a Golden Globe.

HBO had announced Bonham Carter as part of the cast in January (TheColu.mn reported). Among others, the network said Rosie Perez, Heather Graham, Chris Messina, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Vincent Cassel, Alexander Ludwig, and AJ Michalka would appear in the fourth season. The storyline is said to unfold against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera. On April 15, HBO announced that filming had begun.

Details on the reasons for Bonham Carter’s departure were not immediately known. Mid-production recastings are generally rare in the industry—especially for an actress of her stature.
