Only a few days ago it emerged that Helena Bonham Carter (59) had again exited the cast of the fourth season of “The White Lotus” after she had previously been officially confirmed as part of the ensemble. The unusual decision came just after filming began on the new episodes in France. Yet in swift fashion, the show’s creator Mike White (55) has found a replacement: Laura Dern (59) is joining the cast and filling the gap, according to the U.S. industry trade Deadline. White and Dern have a long history of collaboration.
Helena Bonham Carter’s Character Never Quite Fit
The news that Helena Bonham Carter would leave the HBO series drew notice. “During the filming of the fourth season of ‘The White Lotus,’ which had just begun, it became clear that the character Mike White had designed for Helena Bonham Carter did not fit on the set at all,” a network spokesperson told Deadline last Friday. The role was subsequently reconsidered, rewritten, and was to be recast in the coming weeks, HBO explained. As of now, those weeks have turned into only a matter of days.
According to an insider, Bonham Carter’s departure was said to be due to other reasons — there had reportedly been a dispute on set with American comedian Sandra Bernhard (TheColu.mn reported). A spokesperson for the British actress dismissed these claims.
According to Deadline’s latest report, Dern will portray a completely new character, not the one originally conceived for Bonham Carter. Both characters are described as central to the plot of the new episodes — or would have been, in Bonham Carter’s case.
Laura Dern and “The White Lotus” Creator Are Old Friends
Oscar winner Laura Dern has a long-standing working relationship with “The White Lotus” creator Mike White. In 2007, Dern was part of White’s comedy-drama film “Year of the Dog.” The two also collaborated on the HBO series Enlightened — a show about personal transformation and obstacles, with Dern in the lead role. And in the second season of “The White Lotus,” Dern had a speaking role, phoning in as the wife of the Hollywood producer Dominic Di Grasso (played by Michael Imperioli). She did not appear on screen in that season, however.
Season Four Takes Place on the French Riviera
The forthcoming season of “The White Lotus” will unfold on the French Riviera — following the show’s footprints in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand in prior installments. Filming will occur in Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco. Additional shooting will take place in Paris, though the narrative will remain anchored on the Côte d’Azur, HBO confirmed.
Real-life hotels Airelles Château de la Messardière and the Hôtel Martinez will serve as the backdrop for the fictional luxury properties in the White Lotus chain. The season is set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, HBO noted. The legendary festival runs this year from May 12 to May 23. A shoot there has not yet been officially confirmed.
In addition to the new cast member Dern, the lineup includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, and Kumail Nanjiani.
